The sump in my 1950s bungalow basement has probably never had any maintenance and given that there is rotting foliage or roots in the sump space, I think it could be in urgent need of attention. In order to know what to do next I needed to understand where the water in the sump comes from and how the sump works and what my options are, given the Covid situation. I called Westside Drainage to try to get and understanding of the problem. Carlos took the time to explain the way the components of the 1950s sump and how it functions. He did this very clearly and patiently and I now understand the sump enough to anticipate the various directions the problems and how the repair might go, and to make some informed decisions. I enjoyed our conversation. Of course he could not make any recommendations without accessing the sump and seeing it for himself, which I hope will become possible when the Covid risk gets under better control in BC. Carlos is clearly an expert at what he does, was patient, personable and excellent in this first phase of what will likely continue as sump repair project with him when Covid allows it.

We were having drain tile problems in our townhouse complex. There was flooding in the ground floor duct work in one of the homes. We started out with a different company, who were unable to resolve the issue despite considerable time and money spent. When I called Carlo, he was very helpful right away on the phone. Carlo was able to come at short notice due to a drainage emergency I was having and quickly assessed the situation and provided some immediate temporary solutions. He committed to a date to begin repair work within a few days to investigate further and put In the permanent solution. I recently bought a home in Vancouver and it was clear there were drainage problems and I had concerns about flooding. The previous owner did some creative fixes that made things worse and I was worried about potential impact. We called Carlo on a very busy day for assistance with a backed-up drain-line that flooded part of our house. He arrived very soon after our call (even faster than promised), and quickly determined the source of the problem. He stayed on site until city engineers arrived, so he could personally report his findings to them. We moved into our home 3 years ago, and have had two floods in our basement in that time. After the first flood, we called a local, well known company to come out and diagnose what the problem was. We knew that water was backing up through our drain tile system, but didn’t know exactly what the door cause was. After several hours of poking around, we were told they couldn’t figure it out, and a full replacement of our drain tile was necessary. Quoted many thousands of dollars. Second opinion sought from another drainage company who had a different opinion as to what might help, but still weren’t able to diagnose the root cause. We chose to go with the second option, as it appeared more reasonable at the time. Fast forward one year, flood number two happens. Dumbfounded, we searched for yet another opinion and happen upon Carlo from Westside drainage. He was there the next day. It took him less than five minutes to figure out the problem, and less than ten minutes to expose the faulty connection from the sump to the city drainage line. Wow! His recommendation to change the outgoing drainage line to the city was reasonable in price…..and has worked to solve our problem. We were told that water damage in the basement was due to the drain tile being crushed and that it needed to be replaced. I called Carlo to provide a second opinion, and not only did he advise that the drain tile didn’t need replacing, but he was able to locate a broken pipe which was the cause of the damage. After having several contractors look at the damage, he was the only one who spotted the broken pipe, and saved us thousands of dollars. I would highly recommend Carlo. We had Carlo in to scope our very old (100 yr) clay drain tile. He came with his camera and was pleasantly surprised with how good shape they were in. He showed us what he was looking for and tested them out with his hose. We then wanted to add a sump, when he came back to look he found an old buried one that was in pretty good shape. He could have told us we needed a new one but was honest and reduced the quoted price to clean out and add a new manhole barrel. Owner Carlo is an exceptional man. Like a surgeon he solved our wet basement by using his amazing camera. Carlo from Westside Drainage was very knowledgeable and with his camera took me through the inspection and identified the blockages in the tile fairly quickly. Our sloping driveway turned into a small lake after a very heavy rain last spring, resulting in some water in our garage. So I wanted to get it taken care of before the return of the winter rains. When Carlo came (on a Sunday as he was very busy) and checked the drain tiles with his video camera he showed me how badly blocked they were. He explained what he'd do to determine the extent of the blockages and what he expected to find and provided a written quote to do the work. As Carlo exposed the areas he needed to see he kept me constantly updated with what he was finding and explained to me very concisely what had to be done. After cleaning the blocked areas and repairing a couple of connections he demonstrated to me that the drain tiles were working properly. He came up with an innovative solution to replacing the drain cover at the bottom of our driveway, and advised me on how to keep the drain tiles cleaner for the future. The work was done efficiently and the areas that were being worked on were left safely covered or taped off at the end of each day. Had some rain the other night and everything worked great, the water went where it was supposed to go - away from the house. The surface drains at the end of our reverse-slope driveway were draining too slow. During the biggest summer storms this year, they would not drain fast enough, and water would rise and enter the back of the house. Carlo was friendly, extremely knowledgeable and experienced and did the repair to the drainage system as quoted. He told us what we could do ourselves for maintenance in the future. The true test will be the next time we have another downpour as heavy as the one that flooded us out, but I now have confidence thanks this company. Carlo inspected the drain tile of a house prior to my subject removal. He had proper equipment and was very informative about the good and bad of the current system the house has. He also gave me estimation on the cost needed to maintain the drain tile, even for jobs that cannot be done by his company. We have lived in our home for 17 years without any problem with a wet basement. It had been saturated with water when we moved in but I dug up and repaired the drain along one side and the rear of the house myself. I assumed the other side and front had been repaired by the previous owner as the white clean out drains were in place. Well we noticed wet spots on that side this spring and fearing we were now in for a total dig up and replacement of drains we called Westside Drainage.Carlo was at our place promptly and scoped the system with me showing me all the problems which were along the side and front that I thought had been replaced; no they had not. He assured me he could repair three sections that were plugged, stated that existing tile did not need to be replaced and all other sections were clean. He then returned and dug at 3 spots and sure enough found plugged tiles. He was glad to have me watch the work proceed and include me in his observations. The worksite was kept neat and clean and he did not disturb plantings along the wall. Work done in 3 days and you would never notice that it had been disturbed. He also gave me good advice should we decide to put a bathroom in the basement. I would highly recommend this gentleman for any plumbing, drainage work. It was actually a wonderful experience as it was a pleasure dealing with an honest, forthright contractor. In my opinion he was the best I have ever dealt with.
